The Crossroads at Midnight by Abby Howard

I kind of bought this book by accident, but I’m so glad I did. This is a great collection, and I look forward to reading more work by Abby Howard.

The first story, “In the Fields,” was my favorite. It’s a touching story of a queer teenager who makes a friend in an unlikely place.

The second story, “Mattress, Used,” was the most grotesque of the collection. Never take a used mattress home kids. The one our main character takes home in this story contains something worse than bedbugs.

“The Boy From the Sea” is a tragic story of sisterly love. Nia seemed a little too dense, even for a younger kid, but I still enjoyed this excellent story.

“Our Lake Monster” was also a downer, but I have to admit, my sympathies were mostly with the creature – even at the end.

“Kindred Spirits” finished the collection, and it’s another haunting but touching story with a bittersweet ending.
